In 1939, at the New York World's Fair, a Portland photo company called Sawyer's introduced a small bakelite viewer and a paper disc holding seven pairs of Kodachrome slides. Look inside, and the two images merged into one — deep, vivid, three-dimensional. The View-Master® was born, and postcards suddenly looked flat forever.
What began as a souvenir for grown-up travelers — Carlsbad Caverns, the Grand Canyon, world capitals — became the defining toy of generations once Disney characters landed on the reels in the 1950s. Over 1.5 billion reels have been pressed since: fairy tales, cartoons, TV shows, national parks and entire cities, each condensed to 21 little windows of wonder. In 1999 the View-Master took its place in the National Toy Hall of Fame.
